Seeking Receiver advice on AK
I've posted before about the poor receiver quality on my Romanian Ak. It has difficulty accepting steel mags and more in with the poly mags. I have done some checking on altering the mag well but in assessing the overall condition of the receiver, I have decided I ought to replace it if I expect it to be a reliable firearm. It's 1mm or less in thinkness stamped and poorly drilled piece of high-school shop-class crap. There are multiple weak points where the metal has been nearly drilled through.
Here's what I am looking for in a reciever. Not a flat:I don't have the time to and neither does my welder friend to spend that much time on assembly. Readily accepts magazines, expecially poly mags (you all will think I am strange, but I prefer them) without having to wrestle. This should be as smooth as an AR. It must be a reliable long-life build. I am not sold on milled over stamped and have heard arguments in favor of each. I tend to think milled just because that is how I think. So help me out if you can. The firearm was as close to free as possible a few years back (maybe less) so I'm ok with a bit of investment. |
Re: Seeking Receiver advice on AK
sell the junk.
High quality Forged AR15 receiver is only a hundred bucks. |

Check out the Shotgun News
You should be able to find an American Made quality receiver there |

Re: Seeking Receiver advice on AK
Is it a WASR-10? Mags fit too tight? Some see this as a good thing cuz you can always hand-fit your mags by taking a little material off them. I would not mess with the receiver. Poly mags fit the tightest in all my AKs and won't even fit my Lancaster. There is a lot of variation with AK mags anyway and 1mm receivers are pretty much standard even in quality built AK (Vectors, Lancasters, etc) so a tighter fit is more desireable.
How does it function otherwise? WASRs are usually quite serviceable. Call Century if it doesn't work right... |
Re: Seeking Receiver advice on AK
It was WASR. Once I am able to get the mag in place it fires fine. By tight fit I mean lots of grunting and groaning with an eventual pop. Getting it back out is a similar feat.

Once the mag does lock in, is it hard to push in the mag release lever? If so, maybe LIGHT file work on the receiver latch to allow easier release... If you are still having problems run it by a local gunsmith or reputable shop for advice... |

AK47, AK-74, AKM, MAK90 & SPORTER AK'S 1.0 mm FULLY HEAT TREATED STAMPED RECEIVER SHELLS These receivers are unique in the USA because the correct European MIL-SPEC metal is used, shaped, heat treated, then the rails are welded into place. They are then stress relieved as required my Europes Militaries. The correct final step in receiver preparation is to CNC all openings, bolt carrier/extractor rails, mag slot and axis holes. These receivers we feel are superior to any other US stamped receiver and have no comparison with any of its type ever offered before in this country. These fully heat treated 1.0 mm receiver shells exceed the strength and quality standards of any produced in the US. Built to the same exacting military standards as our 1.6 mm receivers these rival any European made 1.0 mm receivers today. |
Re: Seeking Receiver advice on AK
Century's warantee department is good, that would be my first choice.
I'm sure you're just being hyperbolous, but you don't really think you're going to get an AK that changes mags as smooth as an AR, do you? (Because it's never going to happen. Ever.) For a good reciever, Nodak Spud is the best, hands down. Nothing else is even close. However, I wouldn't swap recievers, either have Century fix it (I've been through this a couple of times with the infallible AK:sarcasm:), or sell it and buy another rifle. It's really not worth the trouble and expense to swap recievers, IMO. You could buy a NDS reciever and a parts kit and build a second rifle, then sell your WASR and come out WAY ahead in the money dept. However, if you do strip the reciever, please let me have dibs! |
Re: Seeking Receiver advice on AK
Beef, you've always got good advice. I'll talk to century before doing anything. Building another and selling this one is probably a good idea.
And yes, I know the AK mag will never be as smooth as an AR, but I can dream... |
Re: Seeking Receiver advice on AK
Go to gunbroker and buy a Norinco and skip all the junk that has been cobbled together from left over parts from 6 different countries.
